Appalachian Trail: Tray Mountain Summit – GA

On our way to the mountains for the weekend, the fiancee and I decided to get a day hike in on the Appalachian Trail.  We chose to make the trip up Tray Mountain and take in the views from the summit.  A relatively short hike, the total distance is 2.4 miles (1.2 miles each way).  I would rate this trail as moderate, as you walk slightly uphill for the first half, and a great trail to take the kids or dogs for a walk in the woods. Directions to the trailhead:  From the bridge in Helen, GA … [Read more...]

Tallulah River Gorge Rim Loop – Georgia

Took a day hike to check out one of the impressive natural wonders of Georgia: Tallulah River Gorge.  The views offered on this hike are some of the finest in the southeast.  Other features include various waterfalls, swimming (with a permit), a sliding rock (with a permit) and an impressive suspension bridge over the Tallulah river.  The aforementioned views are beautiful, but be warned that the accessibility of the trail makes this hike quite popular and you will undoubtedly see other outdoor … [Read more...]

Arkaquah Trail: Locust Log Ridge Lookout – Georgia

Took a few family members on this hike that travels along the ridge of Brasstown Bald Mountain, between the cities of Hiawassee, GA and Helen, GA.  Brasstown Bald Moutain, referred to as Enotah by the native Cherokee people, is the highest natural point in GA with a summit elevation of 4,784 feet above sea level.  We went during the summer and this hike was full of scenery, interesting rock formations, occasional wildlife, and colorful flowers; however, this hike would be exceptionally ideal … [Read more...]

Cohutta Wilderness: Emery Creek Trail – Georgia

Took an overnight trip with my dog Jade to this secluded trail in the Cohutta Mountains which features a historic Cherokee gathering site, incredibly scenic mountain views, thick and mysterious hemlock groves, and a nice waterfall at the endpoint.  This hike is rated difficult/strenuous due to the 2,200 foot elevation ascent on the return trip; however, the views and remoteness of this hike make it well worth the effort.  The total time for hiking this trail there-and-back is approximately 4.5 … [Read more...]

Cohutta Wilderness: East Cowpen & Panther Creek Trails – Georgia

Went with the fiancée and our three dogs to the Cohutta Wilderness to check out this hike that features a combined waterfall with a nice mountain view.  The view from vista, the waterfall, and the overall secluded environment of the Cohutta Wilderness makes this trek one of my favorite hikes in the southeast.  The total distance is 8.2 miles there-and-back (4.1 miles each way) and is rated moderate to difficult.  Plan on this hike taking approximately 4 hours to complete.     Directions … [Read more...]
